General English

Our basic timetable for the English course is 15 hours a week. Students can choose to have their three-hour classes in the morning (9:00-12:15), in the early afternoon (12:30-3:45), and in the late afternoon (3:45-7pm). Each session includes a 15-minute comfort break.

Students usually start from the beginners course. This level is mainly for students with no command of the English language at all. For such students therefore, the emphasis is on listening and speaking with attention to pronunciation and vocabulary. Gradually, as students progress, some grammar centred everyday encounters and situations is introduced.

After having started very simple written work in the elementary level, students are taken through the next six stages of the course, all the time increasing their command of the listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. In this process, the student is able to enlarge his vocabulary until it finally reach the proficiency level.

The college is equipped with a Multimedia lab and a Computer lab, where the teacher improves the speaking and listening skills of each student. The Multimedia Lab is equipped with TV and Video.

There are eight levels in the English Language course:

  • Beginners
  • Elementary
  • Pre-Intermediate
  • Intermediate
  • Upper Intermediate
  • First Certificate
  • Advanced
  • Proficiency

Levels

Level 1: Beginners: this course lays the foundations for learning English.

Level 2: Elementary: at this level, students learn the basic tenses, structures and vocabulary.

Level 3: Pre-Intermediate: if they wish, students at this level have their first opportunity to sit for an examination, usually KET.  Exam preparation courses normally take three months.

Level 4: Intermediate: at this level, students may prepare for the PET examination.

Level 5: Upper Intermediate: this course develops the students’ knowledge of English in all four skills (Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing).  Some may choose to take the First Certificate examination after this stage.

Level 6: First Certificate: this course takes Upper Intermediate students to the level where they are ready for the First Certificate examination.

Level 7: Advanced: at this stage, students should have mastered most of the elements of grammar and be ready to concentrate on vocabulary building.  Those who wish may prepare for the Advanced examination.

A pottential student is required to complete a Cambridge placement test prior registration so the regitrar can put the student in the correct level class.
